Tianamen Square and the Forbidden City
Tianamen Square is famous in the US for being the place where a college kid stood down a tank during a protest in 1989. Really, it's a huge open area between four important buildings: The Chinese Senate, the National Museum, Chairman Mao's Tomb, and The Forbidden City.
The Forbidden City sits right in the center of Ancient Beijing. It's the innermost circle or what are now 7 rings of the city. Formerly, you could only enter if you were a high level dignitary. It was where the emperor and empress lived, and it's where all offical business was carried out.
